Career Competency Assignment
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) surveys thousands of employers, identifying
professional competencies necessary for success in the workplace. In this task, you will learn more
about these competencies, identify experiences you have related to these and other career
competencies, and plan for further development of these competencies.
Read the definitions of each NACE competency on page 15 of the 2019-2020 LSU Student Career Guide.
This guide has also been posted to Moodle.

Use this worksheet to identify experiences that have helped you develop specific skills for possible
inclusion in a future resume or cover letter. Be specific in explaining how the experience fits the
competency. DO NOT JUST PUT A CHECK MARK TO INDICATE THAT YOU HAVE THE COMPETENCY –
YOU MUST PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION OF THE EXPERIENCE. Note that it includes competencies
beyond just the core NACE competencies you read about in the above link. Also fill out any of rows if
you have applicable experiences. 30 points.

Now that you have completed the grid, take note of what skills you need to develop. Consider which
skills you feel are most important for your desired profession and reflect on how future experiences can
help you add skills to your repertoire. Demonstrating your mastery of these skills will give you a clear,
competitive advantage in the job search and interview process. Never give up on bettering and adding
skills to your list!
If you are having trouble identifying ways in which your experiences link to these competencies or
coming up with ways to further develop these competencies, consider scheduling an appointment with
the LSU Career Center.
Here are some examples of ways to improve NACE competencies. This is not an exhaustive list; it is just
meant to give you some ideas for experiences to consider.
Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
o Do research (e.g., PSYC 2999/4999)
o Volunteer or work as a tutor
Oral and Written Communication
o Take Communication-Intensive (C-I) courses; Students who take three or more C-I
courses and earn a B- or higher might be eligible for the LSU Communicator Certificate.
o Join a team and remember that teams take many forms (e.g., a student club or
organization, sports team, volunteer group)
o Maintain social media pages for a student organization or as part of a job or internship
o Take on a leadership role (e.g., in a student organization or Student Government)
o Set up a Handshake account and secure a paid or unpaid job or internship that will allow
you to develop professional skills
o Use resources provided by the Career Center to develop a resume
o Schedule an appointment at the Career Center to practice interview skills
o Study abroad
Describe your plan for further developing these career competencies. For at least 4 different
competencies, give at least 1 clear, concrete example of an experience you will pursue to further
develop that competency. Be sure to describe how those experiences relate to the competencies you
chose. 10 points
